Invention Convention State Wiinners

On Saturday, ten Barrington students competed at the state Invention Convention in Concord. Over 155 students from 40 schools attended this event. Barrington Elementary School had several winners:

· J. Carter, M. Hookway, and J. Smith - Most Original and Unique & The Fidelity Investments Technology Award - “The Flist”

Watercolors - Ms. Lenzi's Class

Ms. Lenzi's Second Grade class and Ms. Sans, art teacher, collaborated on a project for the class' Native American Unit. Students picked a traditional design and drew it on their pots, then outlined in marker. Watercolor was painted over the drawing to replicate the color of the clay.

Staff Sergeant David Sawler Visits Grade 2

On January 5, Mrs. Murphy’s Second Graders had a visit from Nicolas’ dad, Staff Sergeant David Sawler. Staff Sergeant Sawler was home on leave for the holidays. He will return to Afghanistan on Saturday.

Staff Sergeant Sawler’s job is a military policeman. He works with the Afghanistan police to help them take care of their country.

He told us a lot about the schools in Afghanistan. The classrooms are not nice like they are in Barrington. The floors are dirt and they have no desks, chairs or lights. Some students walk as much as 5 or 6 miles to school. They begin at 5:00 am and end at 3:00 pm. They don’t have recess or lunch breaks, they work very hard and love school. They all learn English. The students wear uniforms to school and have very little other clothing.

Families don’t typically own cars and there are no big stores there. Children do no have video games and there are no fast food restaurants.

Staff Sergeant Sawler spends a lot of time with the children of Afghanistan. He tells them about the children in the United States. He explains that they play, laugh and have lots of fun. He wants them to know that US children are nice.

We really enjoyed our visit with him. He showed us the many medals he has received. One that he is most proud of is his Good Conduct Medal. This is given to soldiers who follow the rules and don’t get into trouble. He also received 2 bronze stars for going above and beyond the normal job in combat.

BES Alumni shared with students grade K-4 about their recent mission trip to Haiti and the effects of the earthquake. Students then discovered how they can help make a difference in the lives of children in Haiti by "Collecting Change for Change." For 2 weeks students will bring in loose change to support the country as a community. All proceeds will directly benefit the people of Haiti.

Each child chose a bird that might be seen in Barrington and researched the bird. A report was written in school and the projects were completed at home. The students have enjoyed sharing reports and projects within the classroom and with other classes.

Owl Pellet Dissection - Ms. Lenzi's Class - Grade 2

We started our unit by dissecting owl pellets online, read a book about barn owls, then we read and discussed a paper that told more about owls. As a final activity, we dissected real owl pellets using toothpicks and magnifying glasses. We found small bird skulls identified by the beak, various bones and lots of hair.

Memorial Day Assembly 5/22/09

The Barrington Elementary School Community gathered to celebrate Memorial Day with the raising of the flag, reciting of poetry, playing of Taps on tin whistles by 2nd graders, a moment of silence and closing by singing This Land is Your Land.
Throughout the week students at BES planted flowers in the courtyard and learned ways they can take care of their community and Earth.

Ms. Lenzi's 2nd grade class has been studying the weather, so in art class they made a stormy picture. They used masking tape to make the birch trees, and addewatercolor and crayon to create a landscape they way artists do.

We learned many things about writing, acting and stage production when we rewrote “The Gold Coin” in play form and staged a performance for our peers.
• It is important to project our voices
• How to decide what of a story becomes narration, spoken by actors, part of the scenery, and acted out through actor’s facial expressions and movements.
• Collaboration of writing, problem solving, sharing jobs
• How to overcome stage fright
• How much we have grown in the past year. (some of us use to have stage fright in third grade, but not in fourth).

Rainforest Detour - 3rd Grade TAGS Play

A cat has been accidentally dropped off by a plane in the middle of the rainforest. The cat is lost and doesn't know what to do. Several different animals approach the cat and try to convince her to join their groups. The rainforest animals included: parrots, anteater, ant bird, spider monkeys, howler monkeys, katydids, a boa constrictor, and a puma. The cat finds something wrong with each of the animals and their way of life. Suddenly the plane reappears and takes the cat away. All the animals are sad to see her go.

35th Parallel - Music Assembly

The Friends of Music funded the "35th Parallel" performance on March 31, culminating Music in Our School Month.
Mac Ritchey and Gabe Halberg are multi instrumentalists who share music from the Middle East, North India, North Africa and the Mediterranean.
Besides their performance, they held special classes to discuss with third and fourth graders their different instruments and their own creative process and improvisational approach.

KG: "The demonstration is like you are really in outer space and the movie is like you are on a roller coaster. You land on all the planets, it tells you about the solar system and dwarf planets."

GCN: "I learned about a planet I have never heard about. It is beyond Pluto. The movie was called: Family of the Sun. We went through the sun and it made us dizzy."

BT: "We traveled through planets and it felt like we were in a real spaceship."
